Pasta is one of the world’s favorite foods, and we understand why! Delicious tasting pasta dishes are made up a range of diverse kinds of noodles, cooked in different ways, and garnished with unique sauces and ingredients. Let’s have a look at the most common pasta types to find out more.
Long, thin, cylindrical spaghetti is popular in both North America and Europe. Spaghetti is made of semolina, or another type of flour, and water. It’s typically served with a tomato sauce, meatballs or Bolognese sauce. A fast cooking pasta, spaghetti is the ideal meal for lunch, dinner or even a snack!
This spiral shaped pasta is one of the largest exported Italian pasta. Somewhat like a corkscrew, rotini is a tighter twisted pasta noodle that is usually about an inch long. The twirly shape helps thick sauces and meat stick to the noodle for a balanced bite every time. Rotini is delicious as a hot pasta dish or used in a cold pasta salad!
A tube-like pasta, Penne ends are cut on an angle. Penne looks a little bit like the end, or nib, of a fountain pen and its name actually means “pens”! They have ridges on the outside to ensure thicker sauces cling to the pasta for a perfect, balanced taste. Penne is great particularly with chunky or meaty sauces. It is also ideal for baking dishes!
Also known as bow-tie pasta, farfalle is butterfly-shaped pasta noodles that have scalloped edges. This pasta comes in a range of sizes and goes well with almost any sauce and tomato. They can certainly be cooked and enjoyed as a hot meal, but farfalle also does great in a cold pasta salad or as an excellent filler in soup!
One of the more basic pasta shapes, macaroni is a tiny, almost U-shaped tube. Hollow in shape, the macaroni doesn’t have sauces that stick to it very much. Instead, macaroni is more often served baked with a sauce or cheese. You may only be familiar with “mac and cheese,” but macaroni pasta is also great served spicy with beans and peppers.
A sheet of pasta, lasagne can be fresh and soft or pre-cooked and firm. There are many variants including some lasagne sheets that have ripples. In North America, lasagne is most often served in layers between cheeses and sauce, which can include either meat or vegetables. Delicious as a main course meal, lasagne offers a unique taste when baked.
Delightful, small sheets of pasta folded into little packets, ravioli is a treat for all ages. The pasta can be filled with meat, vegetables, seafood or cheese and is then pinched together to make a small parcel. Sauces can be light or heavier ragu-type toppings. The key is that the filling and sauce complement each other!
